How do you really know what’s in popular CBD cosmetics?

HOUSTON – You have probably noticed that when shopping for makeup or other cosmetic products, more and more products now contain CBD or hemp. From lip gloss to foundation, many people are ditching traditional products for those with CBD. But how do you know what’s inside? What should you look for? We have everything you need to know about CBD cosmetics.

How is CBD used in cosmetic products?

First, the basics: CBD stands for Cannabidiol. CBD is not the same as marijuana. It does not contain THC, which is a chemical in marijuana that can make you feel high. A hemp plant is processed and turned into CBD oil (more on that later). Let’s see how CBD cosmetics could help someone.

CBD cosmetics promise many benefits

CBD products have been around for years, but now we see them used more in popular cosmetic items. It is said to contain anti-aging properties, helps with hydration and improves overall skin health. Helen Ruiz is a beautician which manufactures all of its products containing CBD. Her clients at Elestial Lounge are seeing results.

“It’s going to help heal the skin, it’s going to help with the redness, it’s going to help nourish it, and then it’s going to help with the inflammation. So I’ve seen a big transformation,” Ruiz said.

The biggest results she sees are with eczema clients.

“It also helps my clients with rosacea. They have a lot like redness, capillaries, very red skin, very dry and flaky skin. A little bit of CBD just on the face with cleansers, lotions, moisturizers, it can help reduce skin redness and fight flaking,” says Ruiz.

Ruiz made many purchases before moving to this business, Bayou City Hemp, to create his products with high-quality CBD. She says the quality of the products is what matters most to her.

“What they do is they check the amount of CBD if there is THC, parasites, and more water, and how effective it is. And if the claims are true,” Ruiz said.

How to Check Ingredients in CBD Cosmetic Products

CBD is legally sold in makeup stores, pharmacies, and even gas stations! But it’s not regulated yet, so we had to ask how do you know what’s in it? AT Bayou City Hempthey have scientists verify product ingredients and answer our questions.

“To ensure you have a quality product, we need to look at what’s called a Certificate of Authenticity or Certificate of Analysis, which is produced by a third party,” says organic chemist Andrew Pardo.

Our KPRC 2 team got a glimpse inside the lab. At Bayou City Hemp, they select their own products to ensure CBD and CBDA concentrations are met. They also make sure that the material we use is not dangerous. [We did a full story on how these scientists are also using hemp extract to fight COVID.]

“But that you can’t just take our word for it, we have to send it to a third party to do that and they do a very fine analysis of the product you send them. So they looked at the concentration of cannabinoid cannabinoids, as well as their screening for heavy metals, solvents, residual solvents, and microbiology,” he explains.

The QR code is the key to safe CBD products

So how can you – a regular consumer – know what you’re getting when the FDA doesn’t regulate everything that enters and onto our bodies?

For a regular customer buying CBD cosmetics from the store, look at the back of the item for a QR code. Scan the code and it takes you to third-party verification to tell you exactly what it contains.

“You want to make sure that the contents of this product will not harm you. Sure, CBD maybe. But what else does it contain?

It’s a good question that Helen Ruiz wants to answer every time she buys something.

“A lot of over-the-counter stuff, stuff you’ll find at the gas station anywhere, they don’t have that test, which means you don’t know where it came from the source is most important. You want to make sure the product is quality from seed to production,” Ruiz said.

Because that’s what’s going to keep its strength, it’s going to be stronger that way, as opposed to if you get it if you don’t get it tested, if you just don’t know where the source is coming from. You don’t know how strong the product is or how effective it will be. And how long will it last.

CBD cosmetics are not regulated by the FDA

Since these products are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, this might be your best chance of knowing the quality of your product.

And in a recent statement, the FDA addressed concerns about bad products on the market.

“The FDA is aware that certain companies are marketing products containing cannabis and cannabis-derived compounds in a manner that violates the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and may pose a health risk. and consumer safety.” FDA statement.
